Dustin Jake

Dustin Jake is a singer/songwriter out of Phoenix, Arizona. If he had to describe himself, it would only take three words. "I write songs." His passion for music is what drives him in life.

1. Who is your biggest musical influence and why?

I would have to say Jason Mraz is one of my biggest musical influences. I saw him in concert in 2008, and he was the best live act I've ever seen. Seriously, better live than on recording! That concert is a big reason why I became a professional musician, and why I take so much pride in my live performances. Jason exudes so much positivity in his music and in his lifestyle as a whole, which is something I really respect and try to emulate.

2. What is your earliest memory of music?

Well, I'm not sure if it's an actual memory or a memory of a home video, but on my 2nd birthday, I got a Winnie the Pooh rocking horse (I'm quite the Disney nut if you don't already know), and my sister started playing with it. Being the well mannered, unselfish child that I was, I rather calmly asked her to GET OFF. The only way my Gramma was able to keep me occupied was to have me sing Frosty the Snowman for the family. I guess even two-year-olds can be prima donnas! Haha

3. What is your ultimate goal as an artist?

My goals as an artist have really evolved over the years. I've always loved music, and when I finally figured out how to write a song, I was absolutely mesmerized by it (and still am). When I first started to think about it as a career, though, I think my aspirations were more focused on the shallow aspects of it - the attention, the money. It wasn't until I really started going out and touring full time that I realized how passionate I was about performing. There's a limitlessness to performing, just like songwriting, and I love seeing how much I can let my guard down on stage. The songs I write are an expression of myself - snapshots of experiences and feelings that come out of me - but a live performance is an expression of who I am at that particular time. So I guess one of my goals in music is to just be myself - because that's the only way I'll be able to truly connect with an audience or with anyone I encounter. I would much rather call myself a 'performing artist' than a 'recording artist'. To me, it's like the difference between texting and talking in person. A recording is so much less personal - it can't evolve the way a live performance can. But on any given day, I can learn something new about myself even if I'm singing the same lyrics. It's like rereading a book: the words are the same, but the meaning changes with the person. I love that.
